20 Hours in San Francisco: Turning an Unexpected Layover into an Adventure
Ever have an unexpected layover that completely throws off your plans?
Yep. Me, too.
Unfortunately, that’s the reality of travel sometimes. Flights get delayed, routes change, and suddenly you’re stuck somewhere you didn’t plan to be. But honestly? Why not make the best of it.
We ended up with a 20-hour layover in San Francisco after a late-night flight was cancelled. Since there were no other flights leaving until the next day, the airline covered a hotel nearby (always ask- this happens more often than people think). We checked in, got a good night’s sleep, and decided to wake up early for a quick mini adventure in the city.
First Stop: Fisherman’s Wharf
Our first stop was Fisherman’s Wharf, which is packed with restaurants, little shops, and my personal favorite, the sea lions!
We hopped on a water taxi tour for $20, and it lasted roughly 30 minutes. Totally worth it. The boat goes out into open water and gets pretty close to the docks where the sea lions rest. You also get views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, which felt like a pretty solid sightseeing win for such a short trip.
Our driver shared a lot of history about the area, which made the ride even better. And the best part? He let me drive the boat for a bit. Not something I expected to add to my layover resume.
Aquatic Cove + Ghirardelli Square
After the tour, we walked about 15 minutes to Aquatic Cove, a beautiful little beach area where people can swim if the weather’s nice.
Right across the street is Ghirardelli Square, and if you’re a chocolate lover… you’re in trouble. The best kind of trouble.
They have the whole Ghirardelli experience, plus their famous sundaes (which are absolutely a must-try). Endless chocolate options everywhere you turn.
We stopped for drinks at Barrio, a Mexican restaurant nearby. The views were viewing. The cocktails were cocktailing. And everything was delicious. I ordered a Paloma, and I have to say, it might be one of the best I’ve had.
Living the Jetsons Life with Waymo
When in San Francisco, you also have to try something a little futuristic.
We decided to ride in one of the Waymo self-driving cars. It costs about the same as an Uber, but you do need to download the app.
My honest review? A little creepy… but also kind of fun.
Watching the wheel turn on its own while the car navigates the city is definitely a surreal experience.
An Unexpected Cultural Moment
At one point, we had to make a quick stop at Macy’s in Union Square because the handle on our carry-on broke. Classic travel chaos.
But while we were there, we stumbled upon something amazing: the Lunar New Year Parade, which is actually the largest celebration of its kind outside of Asia.
We ended up staying for about an hour, watching the performances, the music, and the incredible energy of the celebration. It is the Year of the Horse, and seeing the pride, culture, and excitement surrounding the new year was both beautiful and educational.
Sometimes the best travel moments are the ones you never planned.
And Just Like That… Before we knew it, our 20 hours in San Francisco were over. Back to the airport we went, heading toward our next destination.
